The History of UNICORP Federal Credit Union
The credit union was formed in 1939 to serve the employees and immediate family members of the Lever Brothers plant located in Hammond, Indiana.Our original charter was granted in 1940 under the name of Lever Brothers Employees Federal Credit Union. By the end of our first year of business, we had 420 loyal members.
In 1995, we changed our name to UNICORP Federal Credit Union to reflect the ownership of Lever Brothers by Unilever. This effectively broadened our eligible employer sponsorship candidates to include any company owned by Unilever.
However, as the employment base in Northwest Indiana continued to change, your directors sought and received approval in 2003 to become a "community chartered" credit union. This made it possible for anyone to become a member who lives, works, worships, attends school or volunteers in Lake County, Indiana. No longer do members have to work for a sponsoring employer. Now, just about everyone in our new, expanded marketing area can become a UNICORP member.
UNICORP has grown over the years to include thousands of members with tens of millions of dollars in deposits and loans. We serve members from many communities with full service branches and service facilities, plus many ATM network locations. We will continue to expand service throughout Lake County, Indiana.
Protecting the deposits of our members is a prime concern at UNICORP. We are members of the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, an arm of NCUA, which provides federal government "share" deposit insurance up to $100,000 per account and up to $1 million or more in insurance coverage depending on the type and ownership of your accounts.
